Duo: 2-Step Authentication

2-Step authentication prevents anyone other than the account owner from logging into an account and it better protects us from hackers or password thieves. Duo is the software we use for 2-Step authentication.

Setting up Duo is a tutorial from the IT KnowledgeBase Video Library that may be helpful to you.

First, Sign in

First, log in to your account for the software you want to access.

Second, Continue on to set up 2-Step Authentication (Duo)

If you need to set up Duo, the following window will display:

At this point, you have to use a computer to set up Duo. Click Add a new device found in the left menu of the screen. (Note: Once this is setup by following these instructions, you can set up your mobile devices as instructed in step 3 below.)

Follow the on-screen instructions after choosing  one of the following authentication methods:

      1. Using Duo With Any Cell Phone or Landline – Duo works with all cell phones and landlines by supporting authentication via phone call and/or SMS passcodes.
      2. Requesting Bypass Codes – A bypass code enables you to log in to your account when your phone or other authentication device is unavailable. To request a bypass code, contact the HelpDesk at HelpDesk@depauw.edu or 765-658-4294. You can also request additional codes be texted to you from the Duo login screen. Click Text me new codes.
      3. Using Duo With a Hardware Token – Hardware tokens are the most basic way of authenticating. They are small and will fit on your keychain with your car and house keys so you have it with you at all times. The original and trusted security key from Yubico is available at USB U2F Security Key and the YubiKey 4C Security Key (USB-C) version is available for the newest Apple laptops.

Optional step for mobile device users

Each of the following mobile options enables you to generate passcodes for easier authentication.

  1. Duo Mobile on iPhone
  2. Apple Watch and Duo Mobile
  3. Duo Mobile on Android
  4. Duo Mobile on Windows Phone
