Working Remotely Tips

Tips for staff, faculty, and students to consider when working remotely.

Create a dedicated work or study space

Finding an area where you will have minimal distractions will help you stay focused. Ideally, this can be a home office, but make sure you let family members know when you are working/studying to reduce the possibility of interruptions. If you do not have a home office, set up an area where there will be the least amount of distractions.

Set a schedule

Continue getting up, taking lunch, and wrapping up at your normal work/study times. Let your colleagues know when you are unavailable, such as taking lunch, and let them know when you are back.

Take breaks

Build in time to stand up, stretch, and walk around the room. Sitting in one place for too long can be stressful to your body and give you eye strain.

Communicate

There are multiple ways for you and your colleagues to keep each other informed and to ask or respond to questions. Google Meet, chat, email, text messages, phone calls, and Trello are a few tools you can consider using to make sure your team does not miss important things that are happening in your area. You may have to be more disciplined with your communication as it is easy to lose track of time when you are immersed in your work.
